Why can't carbon monoxide have a smell?

I understand that carbon monoxide is totally invisible from seeing to smelling. My question is why can't we produce some kind of chemical reaction when carbon monoxide is exposed. Let's say for instance you're home. Instead of your alarm as well as a devise that is attached to your stove ( what ever it may be) and set off a horrible smell or something?
